Out with the old, in with ‘The Turnaround”
Mary Fallin is preparing to leave office from a pedestal, although she admits, it
wasn’t easy. ‘I’m not in this for a popularity contest,’ Fallin said recently during
an interview. ‘I’m in it to get things done. When you fix things, you do make
different people upset, but if you really want to get something done, you’ve got to
be bold enough to take the steps to do it no matter what the outcome may be.’
Not all those close to her see her in such a radiant light. Representative Cory
Williams, D-Stillwater, who served with Governor Fallin
throughout her term, admits, ‘Perhaps we don’t have
anything as a state to brag about now. She’s taking credit
for solving problems
she created’
, he said. ‘Her policies
have been abysmal for the state of Oklahoma’.
Alicia Priest, president of the Oklahoma Education
Association exclaimed, ‘She’s been disastrous for public
education policy’. ‘We’ve had more cuts to public
education funding under her tenure. We have had a toxic
testing culture over her tenure to which we have had to
make changes for the good of our students.’
So good or bad, out with the old. Mary Fallin has had her run of it. What can
we expect now?
Here comes Kevin Stitt. What does he stand for? If his opening statement runs
true, surely Oklahoma will be a better place to call home.
‘I watched my state struggle from crisis to crisis, billion-dollar budget deficits,
four-day school weeks, scandal after scandal’, he said. ‘It seems like the career
politicians, their only answer was new taxes on you and your family, I think we
can change all that’.
He goes on to say, ‘First
off, we’re not going to let
some unions determine
narrative because last
session, I want to remind
everybody, the Republican
Legislature passed the largest
tax increase’. ‘This is not
something you can just come
in and say, “Hey, how can
we fund our different pet
projects”? Because I was elected as Governor to make sure we do government
differently, that we hold agencies accountable’, says Stitt.
Then there are Stitt’s 5 Pillars for Building an Oklahoma We Can Believe In.
These are Government Efficiency, of which will involve line item budgeting,
efficient audits, and state streamlining; Education System, which will include
empowering local communities, expanding technology, and teacher education;
Economic Prosperity, which involves recruiting new businesses and cutting red
tape and waste; Infrastructure, which should open budget pitfalls and create a long
term comprehensive plan; and Healthy Oklahoma which should bring in more
insurance companies and lower outrageous premiums.
Surely even if Stitt brings subtle changes to Oklahoma, anything will be better
than what we have had. Yet I believe there is much in store for us with Stitt. ‘His
